Thank goodness for high gas prices.

Go ahead and troll away.  Go ahead and call me unamerican.  Go ahead and tell me I’m a dumb ass.  I know that im part of a small minority who thinks that high gas prices are only a good thing.  For far to long, Americans have been gluttonous consumers.  We eat everything in site and drive our SUV’s two damn blocks to the McDonalds.  I know that high gas prices will hurt many in the short term but I truly believe that once our society has learned to adjust we will be better off.  We must learn to rely more on our legs, bikes, and public transportation.  I know that many in some cities do not have the luxury of trains and buses that I enjoy.  However, I think public pressure will force such cities to institute transportations options.  Not to mention that more people using public transportation will result in less congestion for those that do have to drive.  I hear that even my dinky little home town in Kansas is considering a fixed-route bus system.  Food prices will likely remain high but I think that to is a good thing.  We Americans must adjust our consumption habits to sustain our natural resources.  Once we learn to eat a balanced diet and not overindulge, we should be able to adapt.  I relish high gas prices.  Let them go higher!

  1. Okay, so with some persuasion I’m with you on the gas. Though I think it’s going to have to go a LOT higher before greater America starts changing its habits for real. It looks like there are small changes going on now, but the same was true in the 70s and eventually people just absorbed the extra cost and went back to their old ways.

I’m not with you on the cost of food, though. It’s one thing if Little Johnny has to walk to school while his parents walk to the bus stop for work (either because they can’t afford gas or because they’re doing the environmentally responsible thing — but when you’re poor ‘environmentally responsible’ is just a side effect of necessity) but it’s a completely different thing to say Little Johnny only eats at school because his family can’t afford good, healthy food.

I hadn’t heard about Salina considering a bus route (but I’m really sick of hearing people call it a rural town). I’m excited for Greensburg, though. I hear there’s going to a miniseries or special on one of the Discovery channels about it (narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, no less).

  2. So is it ok to have to pay about $5.00 for a gallon of milk for my child so that he can be healthy and get what he needs, and as you well know in this ” dinky little town” there is no public transportation yet, so with the gas prices as high as they are and will be, is it going to be possible to drive out to Wal-mart to buy food for our families. Because in case you didn’t know Dillon’s food prices are so high and it is even impossible to walk there and buy our food. And even if we wanted to shop somewhere cheaper like Aldi’s, that is across town also, just as far as wal-mart. Or maybe we all should just walk to McDonalds and feed our kids that so that they can get fatter and fatter, instead of trying to buy them healthier food, we are having to pay the high price of gas and so I disagree with you, even in Kansas city it is hard to get public transporation and that is not a dinky little town. Also when I want my child to be involved in extracirrucular activities and have no money for gas to get him there, then what should I do, I guess just let him sit at home in front of the TV and get fatter and fatter. And so when the nation crumbles and we have another great depression will you still feel this way and as we struggle just to survive and raise our families everyone needs to look at it from all perspectives and realize that as these prices get higher and higher there will be no money for the extras and we will all just be struggling to survive.

  3. There’s no need for the gas prices to be so high. The anaswer is in oil exploration in Alaska and off shore elsewhere in the US.

Wild life will not be harmed in Alaska – the caribu can walk under the pipe lineand no animals are blocked from getting to their feedng grounds.

Drilling along the coast doesn’t harm anything – you can’t see the wells from shore.

Recent advances in technoloy has made the possibility of an accidental spill ls unlikely.

And…the economic boost to Alaska would be astronomical!#

Why are so many people against progresss?

Of course, we still want to find alternative meansa of energy. But for now let’s drill for more oll and thumb ours noses at the other nations holding us hostage.

  4. More oil is not the answer. Even if we drill and get enough to bring down prices now we will just have to deal with the same issue in another 15 years. There is a finite amount of oil on the Earth. We need to pursue alternative energy right NOW!

Why are you telling me that wildlife will be able to walk under the pipe? I know this and never implied otherwise.

I know you cant see coastal wells from shore. I never implied otherwise.

Im not worried about an accidental spill. I never implied otherwise.

The economic boost would be substantial if there were a mandate to install solar panels and hydrogen fuel stations nationwide.

The oil companies are against progress because progress would put them out of business.

We have solar; geothermal; wind; and hydrogen technology right now so instead of spending hundreds of millions to drill why dont we spend hundreds of millions on these sources of energy?

  5. Eric, I’m for whatever source of energy that will fuel our cars, heat and cool our homes, allow us to have the freedom of movement we now enjoy, and to keep the USA from being dependent on other countries that don’t like us. Our way of life and National Defense depends on our self sufficiency. If we can develop renewable sources of energy that don’t pollute the air, even better. If alternative technologies haven’t caught up then we need to provide more oil until they do. The American citizen should not have to pay $4.00 for a gallon of gas. I know the oil companies are resistant to alternatives which is a challenge for our representatives.

By the way reference your commenst above – I’m just sharing thoughts and ideas. I’m not implying anything.

  6. I feel the need to point out that many of my friends read my blog and were asking some questions about your previous reply.

  7. What are the questions?

    Comment by Pop | September 9, 2008 | Reply

  8. Eric, why does your dad argue with you on points you never made?

Eric, doesnt your dad realize that you aren’t a Democrat?

Eric, why does your dad always jump on the bandwagon of whatever the Republicans are saying?

  9. Eric – My response to the questions from your friends:

I didn’t know I was restricted to just the points you made in your Blog. Any other remarks I make are an attempt to clarify or express my opinion. I know that the points you make come from reading and an insiteful thought process. Let me know if I am misusing this Blog system to express my opinion. I respect your opinion even though I may not always agree with you. I think we agree more than you realize. Also, I’d like not to think of our exchanges as argument, rather an exchange of ideas and points of view . Our points of view come from vastly different expeiences.

I don’t think you are a Democrat. But you do seem to side with many of the Democrat positions. My comments regarding Democrats are not necessarily expressed with the idea that you are a Democrat but rather in an attempt to keep you from becoming a Democrat. Again, I am expressing my opinion realizing that you have an opinion of your own. I feel as if you are an independent thinker.

My thoughts on Sarah Palin are not because she is a Republican, rather because she is currently the hot topic. I also happen to like her. I think McCain made an astute choice which may win him the presidency. This doesn’t mean I suppport the Republican party. Actually I find much that is wrong with the Republican party. I disgaree with John McCain on several issues. Right now with a two party election you have limited choices. When a third party puts up a viable candidade I’ll give that candidate a close look. Since I can’t support the majority tenents of eiteher party I like to consider myself an Independent.

I don’t mean to offend you – as I’ve said before I am proud that you share my interest and passion for politics. I am in awe of the time and committment you have made to the political process and servie to your community.

  10. Say whatever you wish to say. Just keep in mind that when you bring up points that I never argued, it looks like you are grasping at straws to defend your position.

To clarify that I am not a Democrat, I will write a post outlining my position on a topic that I lean towards the right on. Stay tuned.

  11. Eric – Anger towards me comes across in your comments. What’s with the grasping at straws comment? I’m not defending my position – I’m merely stating my position. I thought that is what this is all about.

I acknowledge that you are not a Democrat and I look forward to reading your posiiton on the topic referred to above.

  12. Anger? There is no anger. Again, my point is that you brought up issues that I never contested. It just seemed like you had nothing further to say in response to what I said and went off on a tangent. Please, say whatever you wish on here, I welcome the dialogue.

  13. I probably have gone off on a tangent. I prefer to call it exponding on my position. But that’s beqcause I thought the purpose of these Bolgs was to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas. I relish the opportunity to dialogue through this Blog since we aren’t to talk face to face.
